Why Gastroenterology?
I chose gastroenterology due to it giving me the ability to help people improve digestive health, ease digestive pain and suffering, improve wellness, enhance, as well as extend life by treating digestive tract diseases. Food and meals are intimately woven into our culture, our holidays, our families; where sharing food often means community and hospitality. In being a gastroenterologist, I can help improve a patient's issue so they can return to their families and enjoy food and health again. Gastroenterology has a very tangible reward for me, in that, when a patient heals and becomes better, that patient actually feels better: they no longer have pain, no longer have nausea, no longer have bowel dysfunction, can eat their favorite foods. I enjoy that gastroenterology lets me have lifelong and longitudinal relationships with patients. I can meet them when they are ill in the hospital, and care for them, and continue to care for them as they improve, and then continue treating them in the outpatient setting, from age 18 up to old age. Gastroenterology also lets me help patients prevent and avoid colorectal cancer, one of the nation's most common and most deadly cancers, but also a very preventable cancer by going through screening colonoscopy.
