Introduction/What is Eosinophilic Esophagitis?

Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the esophagus caused by an overactive immune response, often triggered by food or environmental allergens. This condition leads to the accumulation of eosinophils – a type of white blood cell – in the esophagus, causing symptoms like difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and food impaction.

FAQs

Common symptoms of EoE include:

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Food getting stuck in the throat (food impaction)
  • Chest pain not related to heart issues
  • Abdominal pain or heartburn
  • Poor appetite

EoE is often triggered by allergic reactions to certain foods or environmental allergens. Common triggers include dairy, wheat, eggs, soy, and nuts. Genetic and environmental factors may also contribute to the condition.

EoE is diagnosed through:

  • Endoscopy: A procedure where a small camera is used to visualize the esophagus and obtain biopsies to check for eosinophil accumulation.
  • Biopsy Analysis: Pathologists examine tissue samples under a microscope to confirm the presence of eosinophils.
  • Allergy Testing: Identifying potential food or environmental triggers may also help guide treatment.

EoE is manageable through a combination of dietary changes, medication, and minimally invasive procedures, allowing patients to regain comfort and improve their quality of life.

Treatment for EoE typically includes:

  • Dietary Management: Elimination diets or allergy-guided food avoidance can help reduce symptoms.
  • Medication: Swallowed corticosteroids and proton pump inhibitors may reduce inflammation and acid production. Biologic medication called dupilumab can also help alleviate symptoms and improve the inflammation on the biopsy.
  • Dilation: If strictures (narrowing) develop in the esophagus, dilation procedures can help improve swallowing.

EoE is a chronic condition that cannot be cured, but it can be effectively managed. With proper treatment, most patients experience significant symptom relief and improved quality of life.
