Why Gastroenterology?
I chose gastroenterology because it gives me the ability to help people improve their digestive health, ease pain and suffering, and enhance their overall wellness. Food and meals are intimately woven into our culture, our holidays and our families; sharing food often means community and hospitality. As a gastroenterologist, I can help patients address digestive issues so they can return to their families and enjoy food and better health again. There is a very tangible reward in seeing a patient heal and feel better – no longer experiencing pain, nausea or bowel dysfunction and being able to enjoy their favorite foods again.
I also value the lifelong relationships gastroenterology allows me to build with patients. I may first meet someone when they are ill in the hospital, continue caring for them as they improve, and then see them in the outpatient setting throughout different stages of life. Gastroenterology also gives me the opportunity to help patients prevent colorectal cancer – one of the nation's most common cancers, but also one that can often be prevented through screening colonoscopy.

Personal Life
Originally from Wisconsin, Dr. Stanke enjoys cycling, tennis, cooking, barbecuing, and playing board and card games. He also enjoys traveling and learning new languages before visiting new countries. A food enthusiast, he especially enjoys barbecue and dumplings from around the world, as well as Spanish, Italian, and Asian cuisine. He and his wife, Kimberly, share a love of cooking, board games, and their two pets—Bucky, a West Highland Terrier-Bichon Frise mix, and Margo, a cat. He is also a fan of the Wisconsin Badgers and loves the Foo Fighters.
