Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum or around the anus. They are very common and may cause symptoms such as rectal bleeding, itching, irritation, discomfort, swelling or tissue that protrudes during bowel movements.

Hemorrhoid treatment with HemWell is an FDA-Cleared, minimally invasive treatment designed to shrink internal hemorrhoids without cutting or removing tissue.

HemWell uses a gentle electrical current to reduce blood flow to the hemorrhoid. Over time, the treated hemorrhoid shrinks and symptoms improve. The procedure is performed in a medical setting and is designed to provide effective treatment with minimal disruption to your routine.

FAQs

HemWell uses a low-level electrical current that is applied directly to the internal hemorrhoid. This causes a controlled reaction that reduces blood flow to the hemorrhoidal tissue. As the blood supply decreases, the hemorrhoid gradually shrinks and symptoms improve.

Unlike traditional hemorrhoid surgery, HemWell does not involve cutting or removing hemorrhoidal tissue.

HemWell is designed to treat grade I–IV internal hemorrhoids, including those that may cause bleeding, discomfort or prolapse. Your healthcare provider will evaluate the grade and severity of your hemorrhoids, along with your symptoms, to determine whether HemWell is an appropriate treatment for you.

HemWell offers patients a minimally invasive alternative for treating internal hemorrhoids. Benefits may include:

  • No cutting or surgical removal of tissue
  • Minimally invasive treatment
  • No incisions or stitches
  • Minimal downtime for many patients
  • Relief from common internal hemorrhoid symptoms

HemWell is performed under anesthesia to help ensure a comfortable experience during the procedure. Because it is minimally invasive and does not involve cutting or surgically removing hemorrhoidal tissue, discomfort following treatment is typically minimal. Some patients may experience temporary pressure, fullness or mild discomfort afterward. Your provider will explain what to expect before, during and after your procedure.

The number of treatments needed depends on the number, size and severity of your hemorrhoids. Some patients may benefit from more than one treatment session. After evaluating your condition, your provider will develop a treatment plan based on your individual needs.

HemWell is a minimally invasive procedure performed under anesthesia and does not require surgical removal of hemorrhoidal tissue. After the procedure, patients may return to normal activities once cleared by the anesthesia team. Heavy physical activity should be avoided for 48 hours. Your provider will give you specific instructions about recovery, activity and what to expect following treatment.

Hemorrhoid symptoms can be similar to symptoms caused by other digestive or colorectal conditions. Rectal bleeding, in particular, should be evaluated by a healthcare provider rather than assumed to be caused by hemorrhoids.
