Dr. Long B. Nguyen is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. His title, D.O. means he is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) who is a fully trained and licensed doctor who has attended and graduated from a U.S. osteopathic medical school. A Doctor of Medicine (MD) has attended and graduated from a conventional (allopathic) medical school. He completed undergraduate studies at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York and a master’s degree at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the Graduate School of the University at Buffalo – State University of New York. After he had graduated with honors from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 2004, Dr. Nguyen completed his post-doctoral training in Internal Medicine residency, and subsequently, in Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship at the University of Connecticut Health Center School of Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut. He has served as co-chief fellow during his last year of training, coordinating academic training activities for junior fellows.
Dr. Nguyen had extensive training and experience in taking care of patients with various gastrointestinal and liver diseases, including intestinal bleeding, hepatitis B and C, liver cancer, cirrhosis, and associated complications. He also had extensive training in advanced endoscopic techniques for early detection of esophageal, gastric, colon and rectal cancers, and treatment of Barrett’s esophagus – a condition that could lead to cancer of the esophagus. Dr. Nguyen also had completed training in ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) procedures for management of benign and malignant conditions of the bile ducts and pancreas, and in endoscopic placement of stents for the esophagus, duodenum, and colon for patients with benign or malignant conditions. He also performs balloon small bowel enteroscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions in the small intestine.
